The countdown has begun. From August 4 to 8, 2026, Cotonou will resonate with the rhythm of the World Social Forum (WSF). Among the major players expected at this significant gathering of international civil society, the Rethinking Security in Africa Network (RRAS) is already emerging as one of the most anticipated voices.
With its motto “PEACE FACTORY,” RRAS intends to place solidarity, equity, and collective action at the heart of discussions on the stability of the African continent.
Weaving Peace: A Powerful Metaphor for Africa
The official poster for the event speaks volumes about the network’s vision. The image depicts several pairs of hands intertwining cotton threads to create a strong fabric. This artisanal metaphor perfectly illustrates the RRAS philosophy: security and peace are not imposed by force of arms; they are patiently andcollectively « made » by uniting the forces of civil society.
For RRAS, ensuring security in Africa requires « rethinking » current models. It means moving from a purely military vision to a human-centered approach focused on social justice, inclusion, and endogenous development.

Benin’s selection to host the 2026 World Social Forum provides RRAS with an ideal platform. Over five days, workshops, panels, and roundtables will allow the network to share its analyses and propose concrete alternatives to address the continent’s contemporary security challenges.
